The Best Gift from Our Special Needs Children — Thankfulness

On Thanksgiving 2016, Blossomville.org was launched, which also marks our first Medium blog. Blossomville.org is the brainchild of us three moms living in Ontario, Canada. Our shared experiences of helping our children achieve the best potential medically and developmentally, as well as becoming better versions of ourselves, led us to create this online community for families with special needs children and their supporting networks of professionals.

Thinking back almost 2 years ago when we huddled at a warm Tim Horton’s on a bleak winter day and when the idea was first born, we are extremely thankful of this journey — a journey that has taken us to a much wider community of strong, caring, loving and grateful parents and professionals. We are deeply obliged to many people for their love, generosity, support and well wishes.

For our first blog, therefore, we’d like to focus on thankfulness. In preparation for the website launch, we invited families, friends, therapists, teachers, service providers, etc. — anyone whose life has been touched by children with special needs — to share their thankful messages. We thought we’d share the thankful messages we received on this special day.

"I’m grateful by merely staring at my angel as he sleeps. Giggling at times even. What a wonderful world spending each day with him as he makes miracles…."

"I’m thankful everyday that I get to be the mom of one very special little girl! She’s a handful at times but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!!!"

"Thank you for the happiness and challenges that you bring. It makes me who I am today- stronger Mama!"

"I’m really thankful for the help received from many therapists and the support from the school team, and I’m so thankful for the sharing and emotional support from other moms, especially from two of my best friends. I’m extremely thankful for the progress my son has been making. He has filled my heart with so much love, courage and strength, to make me a better mom and a better person."

"Moments like this…smiles from the patiently waiting passersby…makes me feel thankful that we get to see the kindest and nicest side of us all."

"I’m thankful to God, for blessing me with a lot of patience, to guide and help my special need son so he can blossom and grow up as any other normal child…Abba father!!!"

"The fact that all people we’ve met along this journey are kind and warm. One particular thing I’m thankful for is acceptance from families and friends. I hope my son will always have someone by his side accepting him as who he is."

"I am blessed with being a parent and also a grandmother to special people and I have also had the amazing pleasure of caring for other people’s special people the joy they have brought to my life is wonderful."

"We are able to take out some little time to spend with such children…"

"I am thankful for the families and of the students that I have had the opportunity to know; for the friends I have made. I am thankful for the lessons my students and their families have taught me."

"I praise God for choosing me to be the parent of 2 very special sons who have blessed me with wonder and unconditional love. I also thank God for leading me to the other parents and families of the MPS world as we share support and challenges of loving and caring for our special children and angels."

"Every day I wake up with my family. I thank God for everything in my life."

"I am humbled by the trust parents place in me and I thank them for their support that makes the success we achieve possible. Together with a positive mindset, good skills and an intensive program we know that we can make a difference in the lives of children and their families."

And we’d like to end this blog with a quote by Anthony Robbins:

"When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears."
