Occupational therapist Jan Z. Olsen is the founder and developer of the Handwriting Without Tears® program. The curriculum is the culmination of successes over the past 30 years, plus many new ideas from collaborations with teachers, occupational therapists, and administrators across the country (USA). Understanding the challenges in the classroom and the gaps in educational offerings, Jan and her staff work to create materials and books that meet educators’ needs in a way that is fun and engaging, while developmentally appropriate and effective for all students.
The Handwriting Without Tears® curriculum draws from years of innovation and research to provide developmentally appropriate, multisensory tools and strategies for the classroom. The easy-to-teach, easy-to-learn curriculum makes handwriting mastery joyful for students and their teachers. Research supports the active teaching of handwriting. Recent findings demonstrate that writing by hand improves creative writing skills and find motor skills. In fact, elementary students have been found to write more and faster by hand than when keyboarding.
The Handwriting Without Tears® product line includes workbooks and teachers’ guides from kindergarten through fifth grade: hands-on materials, music, assessments, and more than 600 annual workshops to train educators throughout the world in the HWT teaching methods.
